Gadoliniumtrichlorid, GdCl3, ist eine farblose, hygroskopische, wasserlösliche Verbindung, die normalerweise als Hexahydrat, GdCl36H2O, auftritt. Gadoliniumtrichlorid kann durch die Reaktion von festem Gadolinium mit Salzsäure bei 600°C dargestellt werden: 2 Gd + 6 HCl 2 GdCl3 + 3 H2 Ein anderer Herstellungsweg für Gadoliniumtrichlorid ist die Synthese von (NH4)2[GdCl5], das dann bei 300°C zu GdCl3 zerfällt:
10 NH4Cl + 2 Gd 2 (NH4)2[GdCl5] + 6 NH3 + 3 H2
